The Quilt and the Seamstress

We wanted to highlight the importance of the quilt in this story. Throughout black history quilts have had more meaning than just keeping person warm. During the times of the underground railroad quilts were hung out to help communicate codes that led slaves to their freedom. Quilting has a history of freeing black bodies from white systems of oppression. Which is why it's so important that in this story Esther quilt with all her savings represented her future, and her freedom.
