The Emerald Ballroom

The scene of Dorothy and her crew getting to The Emerald City pays homage to queer ballroom, and black art/fashion. Ballroom was created in the 1970s by black and Hispanic queer individuals. It was a space to express one's queerness safely. In that space queer folk would dance and model to different categories such as the face, vogue, opulence, etc. They would share their artistry through their bodies and through clothing
